Mary Gauthier (pronounced Go-Shay) dropped out of high school and
stole the family's car at the age of 15, leaving behind Thibodaux,
Louisiana and heading for any place where she thought she might
"fit in." In her search for finding what she calls "my
people," Mary would find herself celebrating her 16th birthday
in a Baton Rouge detox, and her 18th birthday in a Kansas City jail
cell. That was just the beginning. Her parents returned Mary to
Louisiana, only to have her steal the car again. This time she never
returned. Among other experiences along the way, Mary studied philosophy
at Louisiana State University and ran her own award winning restaurant,
Dixie Kitchen, in Boston's Back Bay. Her songs celebrate the people
whose lives are lived outside of anything resembling normal. "...her
narratives depicting the seamy and sad lives of addicts, AIDS victims,
and misfits... Gauthier's grief is genuine... but while many of
the songs are desperately bleak, her moving lyrics and tender music
reflect the humanity that exists among people considered to be society's
rejects." Mary's third album Filth and Fire, produced
by Texas-based producer, Gurf Morlix, has just been released to
strong critical acclaim.
