The Waifs hail from Australia. Donna and Vikki Simpson were led
to music by their dad, a fisherman and campfire-style guitarist.
Dylan was an early influence. In 1992 the girls left Albany, West
Australia, to travel around the country singing - from gold mines
to resort pubs and zinc mines to fishing villages. Both play guitar
and Vikki blows a mean harp. On route they met guitarist, Josh Cunningham.
After jamming for 10 minutes they asked him to join the band and
The Waifs was formed. Now the band is five strong with Dave MacDonald
on drums and Ben Franz on bass. After three independently released
albums, The Waifs, Shelter Me and Sink or Swim, the
band began reaching a wider audience and critical acclaim. They
have been touring internationally for the better part of two years,
including two appearances at the Newport Folk Festival. Their recent
single, "London Still," is getting airplay around Australia
and the world is waking up to the blues, bluegrass and rock influenced
sound of this youthful and energetic band. Smile, they'll probably
be taking your picture.
