The Duhks are a young kick ass folk band hailing from Winnipeg,
Manitoba. Their show is a pure, unrestrained and dynamic presentation
of traditional and contemporary acoustic music designed to make
you kick up your feet and party. The harmony of the Celts mixes
with Appalachian Old Time fiddle music, with French-Canadian Gigues & Reels,
with some of the songs of the great songwriters of the last century
and with new songs and tunes written by themselves and by their
friends.
Tania Elizabeth has been playing fiddle since she was old enough
to hold it in place. Tania is an amazingly skillful, fiery and
entertaining fiddler and her
knowledge of fiddle music spans a lot of territory. Widely recognized for her
talents, she has served as Celtic instructor at Nashville legend Mark O'Connor's
fiddle camp.
Jordan McConnell's impeccable sense of timing brings a steadying
musical presence to the group. In addition to being a great guitar
player he is an
excellent vocalist and a fine tenor banjo player.
Jessee sings with authority. She has real character in her voice
and is able to believably sing everything from Old Time ballads
to Celtic laments, to blues
and torch songs.
Bandleader Leonard Podolak brings his superb banjo playing, his
tune writing skills, his singing, his ability as an arranger and
his extensive experience
as a professional artist into the mix. Producer Mark Schatz sees Leonard
as "a
child of the multicultural mecca of the Winnipeg Folk Festivals with a passion
for the music and the fire in his belly to pull this marvelously talented crew
together." He adds, "I am intimately familiar with Leonard Podalak's
eclectic blend of French Canadian, Celtic, and Old Time music, with some afro-latin
rhythms thrown in to propel the distinctive groove to an even higher energy level,
because I produced his last CD, Juno nominated The Road to Canso. This new project
represents the next step in the evolution of a sound that he has pioneered, and
it features some astounding young talent and some veterans of the rich Winnipeg
music scene."
The Duhks first CD, Your Sons and Your Daughters, pays
tribute to the fact that they all come from musical families. Shatz
describes
the project as "a true collaboration that features a colorful
array of material ranging from sensitive ballads and folk rock
remakes of old time Appalachian songs to fiddle tunes that swing
jubilantly with the dance rhythms of traditions from both sides
of the border and the Atlantic."
Make way for the Duhks!
