Cheryl's first concert was to a captive audience. She found
an old toy ukelele in a neighbor's attic and serenaded her
mother who was taking a bath at the time. Her first pubic performance
was at a Hootenany type show when she was 12. She started writing
songs when she was 17.
She has never had a "day job." Her first professional
gigs were at the Steak and Ale Restaurant in her home town of Timonium,
Maryland. The place only had one PA system. In the middle of her
songs you would hear, "Jones, party of four. Jones,
party of four." She finally convinced them to get a second PA system.
Cheryl is a gifted songwriter and performer as well as a natural
comic. Many of Cheryl's songs are emotional portraits of
people. Others are hilarious situation comedies. "Politically
correct" is not a concept that Cheryl has much use for. Any
sacred cows grazing around the stage will be slain. Many of the
comic "ditties' are not recorded and can only be heard
in concert. Her performances are more akin to those found in a
comedy club than a coffee-house. She will follow a funny story
with a song that leaves you wiping the tears from your eyes and
when she gets on her soapbox the comedian is never far behind.
Her entire concert is an emotional roller coaster.
She has several cds to her credit, her last being the Rounder
release, Sylvia's Hotel, and the compilation album, Different
Strokes. Cheryl
is an engaging performer who has filled the room in her first two visits to
Common Fence Music.
