The Crooked Jades have been playing "old-time with an attitude" since
1994. This San Francisco based band helped to spawn the West-coast
old-time revival which has the
thirty-something, pierced and tatooed crowd square dancing. This
quintet of accomplished singers and instrumentalists play an array
of vintage and contemporary instruments including guitar, dobro,
Hawaiian slide, fiddle, clawhammer banjo, banjo uke and fretless
minstrel banjo.
Led by founder,
Jeff Kazor, The Jades draw from a vast collection of pre-radio
material ranging from soulful old-time ballads to rocking string-band
dance
music as well as their own traditionally-inspired
compositons. Two of their finest albums, The Unfortunate Rake: Volumes
1 and 2 were co-produced
by "idiosyncratic Americana artist" Richard Buckner.
They'll be bringing the music back home for
the Merle Fest and stopping by Common Fence Music along the way.
