Chatham County Line is the "new traditionalist" bluegrass Quartet from North Carolina riding its first sizable wave of national attention.
Students of the bluegrass masters and all devotees of John Hartford,
they are not interested in being catalogued with the post-Dead
string-jam-band phenomenon. Too trippy! At the same time, they
grew up with an open ear to the airwaves.
Route
23, their first cd showcases their bluegrass chops. Speed
of the Whippoorwill, their 2nd cd, relaxes a bit, opening
up to broader influences.
Dave Wilson is the lead singer, a gifted
songwriter and an exceptional flatpicker. He wrote most of the
material for the first two albums and was honored to be chosen
as a finalist in the 2004 Chris Austin Songwriting contest at MerleFest.
John Teer plays the fiddle and mandolin and sings
high tenor. John started playing at three and along the way he
has just about mastered anything with strings. "Teer" is also a gifted instrumental songwriter.
Chandler Holt is as solid a 5-string picker as
they come. He plays in the three-finger style, originated in NC,
and popularized by Earl Scruggs.
Greg Readling is
an amazing multi-instrumentalist. When not holding down the rhythm
for CCL on the Acoustic Bass, or filling out a four-part harmony,
he can be found playing piano, Hammond organ, accordion, melodica,
guitar, or pedal-steel.
