Deb Talan and Steve Tannen had been obsessing over each other's
cds for about a month before meeting. They began writing together
the first night they met and soon formed The Weepies. Was this
just about two songwriters meeting?
"We were fans of each other.
When we met, there was an electric connection that made us both
nervous. After the show, when everyone went home, we stayed up
all night playing songs for each other, drinking a bottle of wine
and trading an acoustic guitar back and forth in a tiny apartment,"
says Talan. "That night has lasted four years so far," adds Tannen.
With two cds to date Happines (2003) and Say
I am You (2006) they are creating a thoughtful
and confident, lyrical and transporting catalog of songs firmly
rooted in the acoustic singer-songwriter tradition but infected
with the catchy melodies and hooks of the best radio play. The
wistful "World Spins Madly On" from the new
album, can be heard in the new film by director Nicole Holofcener,
Friends with Money (2006 Sundance Film Festival).
The Weepies are creating
an intelligent new pop music. We're honored to have them on this
year's schedule.
