Connecting the Beats (CTB) is a two-part exploration
of African and Afro-Caribbean Beats in Rhode Island. The program
is offered for free to all students of Newport County, and is
a collaboration between Common Fence Music, the Boys & Girls
Clubs of Newport County, the East
Bay Met School, the Jamestown
Teen Center and Portsmouth
Action for Youth.

CTB Part Two: 8-Week
Percussion Workshop
Students have the option to register for a free
8-week percussion workshop at the Boys and Girls Club with Jesus
Andujar.
Jesus will demonstrate traditional drumming
rhythms, beats, and techniques for students to learn and practice
together. A variety of drums and other percussion instruments are
provided or you can bring your own. In addition, DVDs on the origins
of African, European, and Caribbean percussion music -- which influences
much of today's popular musical styles -- will be presented.

Percussion Workshop
Bringing African Roots Music to the Youth of Newport County
- Free concert tickets for area youth for:
Kinobe and Soul Beat Africa show on Oct 24, 2009.
Jesus
Andujar and Grupo Sazon show on Feb 6, 2010.
- A free 2-hour percussion workshop for Newport
County students with Kinobe and Soul Beat Africa (on tour from
Africa).
Saturday, Oct 24, from 1 to 3 pm -- the day of their concert.

Bringing African Roots Music to the Youth of
Newport County funding provided by a grant from the
Rhode
Island State Council on the Arts, through an appropriation
by the Rhode Island General Assembly, a grant from the National
Endowment for the Arts and private funders.
